‘I Never Said That!’ 10 Famous Quotes Winston Churchill Never Actually Said

“I never said that.” — Winston Churchill (probably)

Winston Churchill was one of the most quotable figures in history. His speeches rallied a nation, his wit was legendary, and his way with words earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature. But here’s the thing: a good chunk of the “Churchill quotes” floating around the internet? He never said them.

Churchill has become what scholars call the “king of fake quotes”—a phenomenon where any clever or inspiring phrase gets attributed to him simply because it sounds like something he might have said. As one researcher put it, people link his name to maxims because they think he “should” have said them.

We found this so amusing (and so very British) that we created our “I Never Said That” design featuring the great man himself. Because if Churchill were alive today, he’d probably be quite tired of correcting the internet.

Here are ten quotes commonly attributed to Churchill that he almost certainly never uttered.

1. “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

This motivational poster favourite appears nowhere in Churchill’s written or spoken words. The International Churchill Society, which has searched through 50 million words by and about Churchill, has found no evidence he ever said it. The earliest known version actually appeared in a 1943 Christian publication—with no mention of Churchill whatsoever.

2. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

This one became especially famous when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis used it while suspending his presidential campaign in 2024—and was promptly fact-checked by historians worldwide. Churchill never said it. Interestingly, an almost equal number of internet sources credit this quote to Abraham Lincoln, but there’s no evidence he said it either.

3. “If you’re not a liberal when you’re 25, you have no heart. If you’re not a conservative by the time you’re 35, you have no brain.”

As historian Paul Addison of Edinburgh University pointed out, Churchill can’t have said this—he was a Conservative at 15 and a Liberal at 35! The quote actually traces back to a French book from 1875, decades before Churchill entered politics. Plus, would he really have spoken so disrespectfully of his wife Clementine, who remained a lifelong Liberal?

4. “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

This one belongs to Victor Hugo, the French novelist, who wrote something similar in an 1845 essay—about 30 years before Churchill was even born. Hugo’s original was rather more poetic, comparing fame to light that attracts gnats.

5. “The only traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy and the lash.”

A brilliant quip, but not Churchill’s. His assistant Anthony Montague-Browne confirmed that Churchill never said these words—though he added that Churchill “wished he had.” Sometimes the truth is almost as good as the legend.

6. “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.”

What Churchill actually said, in the House of Commons in 1948, was far more subtle: “I consider that it will be found much better by all parties to leave the past to history, especially as I propose to write that history myself.” Same spirit, but with that characteristic parliamentary wit rather than blunt self-promotion.

7. “Never, never, never give up!”

Close, but not quite. What Churchill actually said at Harrow School in 1941 was: “Never give in—never, never, never, never, except to convictions of honour and good sense.” That last bit is rather important and gets conveniently dropped from the motivational poster version.

8. “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

Sounds Churchillian, doesn’t it? But this fake quote appears nowhere in the Churchill canon. No speech, no letter, no memoir. It’s simply been invented and attached to his name because it seems like something a wise statesman might say.

9. “I am a man of simple tastes—I am quite easily satisfied with the best of everything.”

This one was actually said about Churchill, not by him. According to Churchill’s private secretary, it was his close friend F.E. Smith, Lord Birkenhead, who originated the remark: “Mr Churchill is easily satisfied with the best.” Churchill may have repeated it later, but he didn’t coin it.

10. “Jaw, jaw is better than war, war.”

Churchill did speak about the value of diplomacy, but what he actually said in 1954 was “Meeting jaw to jaw is better than war.” The pithier “jaw, jaw” version was said four years later by Harold Macmillan during a visit to Australia—and has been wrongly credited to Churchill ever since.

Why Does This Happen?

There’s actually a term for this phenomenon: “Churchillian Drift.” Coined by British writer Nigel Rees, it describes how any clever quote that doesn’t have an obvious author will eventually be attributed to one of a handful of famous figures—usually Churchill, Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, or George Bernard Shaw.

Churchill said so much, and said it so brilliantly, that people assume any witty remark must be his. It’s a compliment, in a way—but it also means we lose track of what he actually believed and how he actually spoke.

Celebrate the Misquoted Man Himself

We created our “I Never Said That” Churchill design as a tribute to this peculiar phenomenon. It’s perfect for history buffs, Churchill admirers, and anyone who’s ever had to correct someone on the internet.

Because sometimes the best way to honour a great wit is to acknowledge that even he couldn’t have said everything clever.
